New Orleans really was one of the most memorable solo trips I have taken. I have so many recommendations I didn't know where to start. So I started with the most memorable meal I had. Court of Two Sisters.
Located in the heart of Bourbon Street, this buffet style restaurant is located through an Alley that opens up to one of the largest indoor/outdoor restaurants I saw in New Orleans. It caught my attention as they have daily Live Jazz music and a brunch buffet full of the southern Louisiana classics.
Made to order seafood omelettes and Benedict's, Andouille Sausage & Bacon, Chicken & Sausage Gumbo, Red Beans & Rice, Turtle Soup au Sherry,
Shrimp Etouffee, Chicken & Sausage Gumbo, Corn Macque Choux and even more when Lunch service starts! The food was good and they offer mimosas by the glass, carafe, or bottle (I did bottle).
The music was quaint and nice which is exactly what you want to cure that Bourbon Street Hangover. A three piece jazz band that travels throughout the restaurant (make sure you bring cash to tip).
There is plenty of indoor and outdoor space so depending on the weather you are comfortable but make sure to book a reservation. During the week, it is not so crowded but as the week progresses, you can bet this place is packed.
Last but not least, the service. Holy cow. The nicest, most accommodating, fun authentic New Orleans people serve you. Not only do they serve you, but they make sure you know the drill so you aren't left feeling lost or knowing when you can start. They all were smiling, were kind, super attentive, and great conversationalists and they did not rush me. I was so happy with this solo dining experience.
You must add this to your list of things to do in New Orleans. I had never had turtle soup before and I had three refills because it was so tasty. I stayed for the entire bottle of champagne, read a book, and relaxed. Get your reservations and tell them Megan sent you!
I am a fan of Top Chef. I try to go to all the restaurants the competitors own. From Brother Luck, and Carrie Baird to Steffani Izzard and the Voltaggio Brothers, I have tasted and experienced some amazing places. Chef Nina Compton's Compere Lapin was no exception.
The first thing I loved was the location. It is walking distance (it is a little distant) to the French Quarter but just out of the dive and party scene. The second thing I loved was the decor and atmosphere. I am a sucker for a good bar situation and the Compere Lapin's bar was beautiful, stocked, colorful, and had a small window into the kitchen. Great for singles.
I could not decide what I wanted to try. The menu is inspired by a mix Chef Nina's Caribbean roots and local New Orleans cuisine, taking the normal new Orlean's staples and elevating them into a fine dining experience.
The bartender gave me great recommendations and I took them. Blackened Pig Ears with Smoked Aioli and Curried Goat with Sweet Potato Gnocchi. BUT! One of my favorite dishes I ever had and by far my favorite on my visit was such a simple yet amazing, perfect, flavorful, cold dish that compliments the hot New Orleans weather. You must have the Crab Fingers if they are in stock!
They are chilled crab claws with the most delicious, acidic, light, I want to say "vinaigrette" that keeps the integrity of the natural flavor of crab while also amplifying it. They are served with an aioli that I didn't need to touch. You simply pick it up, scrape the meat off, and literally melt inside with joy.
If you are looking for nice quiet fine affordable fine dining experience, this is the place to go while visiting New Orleans. The menu also includes Pre Fixed Menus, a brunch, wine, and spirits. Enjoy this gem and tell them Megan sent you!
